Median to mean and SDMediana a media y DE

Many trials report a median with the interquartile range or the range. Convert them to a mean and SD so the study can enter a meta-analysis of means.

The calculator picks the scenario from what you enter: median with range (S1), with IQR (S2), or with both (S3). The mean uses the optimally weighted estimators of Luo et al.; the SD uses Wan et al. Both are the methods recommended in the Cochrane Handbook for approximately normal data.

S2: x̄ ≈ w·(q₁+q₃)/2 + (1−w)·m, w = 0.7 + 0.39/n ; SD ≈ (q₃−q₁)/η(n), η(n) = 2Φ⁻¹[(0.75n−0.125)/(n+0.25)]
S1: x̄ ≈ w·(a+b)/2 + (1−w)·m, w = 4/(4+n^0.75) ; SD ≈ (b−a)/ξ(n), ξ(n) = 2Φ⁻¹[(n−0.375)/(n+0.25)]

Groups are combined one pair at a time with the exact formula from the Cochrane Handbook, which accounts for both within-group variance and the spread between group means.

SD = √{ [(n₁−1)SD₁² + (n₂−1)SD₂² + n₁n₂/(n₁+n₂)·(M₁² + M₂² − 2M₁M₂)] / (n₁+n₂−1) }

All four routes follow section 6.5.2 of the Cochrane Handbook. Confidence intervals and p-values are converted with the t distribution, which matters for small trials.

Enter events and totals per arm to get the risk ratio, odds ratio, risk difference and number needed to treat, with 95% confidence intervals.

RR and OR use the log method with Wald intervals; the risk difference uses the normal approximation. The NNT interval inverts the limits of the risk difference and is not reported when that interval includes zero, as Altman recommends.

SE[ln RR] = √(1/a − 1/n₁ + 1/c − 1/n₂) ; SE[ln OR] = √(1/a + 1/b + 1/c + 1/d)

Continuous outcomes: SMDDesenlaces continuos: DME

Compute Hedges' g when trials measure the same outcome on different scales, and convert between odds ratios and standardised mean differences.

Hedges' g applies the small-sample correction J to Cohen's d computed with the pooled SD. The OR to SMD conversion assumes an underlying logistic distribution (Chinn).

g = J·d, J = 1 − 3/(4(n₁+n₂−2) − 1) ; Var(d) = (n₁+n₂)/(n₁n₂) + d²/(2(n₁+n₂)) ; SMD = ln(OR)·√3/π

Proportions use Wilson score intervals, which behave well near 0% and 100%. Likelihood ratios and the diagnostic odds ratio use log-scale intervals, adding 0.5 to every cell if any cell is zero. Post-test probabilities apply Bayes' theorem in odds form, as in the Fagan nomogram.

Cohen's kappa corrects observed agreement for agreement expected by chance. The confidence interval uses the large-sample standard error. PABAK (prevalence-adjusted, bias-adjusted kappa) is shown because screening data usually have very few includes.
